Gardening in Spring
Gardening is one of the greatest pleasures for many folks. Now that spring has sprung in many parts of the country, it is the time to take inventory of our gardening supplies and to figure out what we need to update or replace for the blossoming gardening season.
Our garden tools from last season need to be sharpened and oiled. Any plants which need seasonal pruning such as lilacs, will need to be pruned back after this season's flowers have faded. Those plants which have outgrown their flower pots and window boxes will need to be repotted.
Our majestic lawns which provide us with lush green growth and that nice manicured look will need to have a good dose of weed and feed applied within the next few weeks to make sure that we catch any weed growth just as it is starting. This will also ensure a quick green up early in the season that will last till the start of summer.
The local garden center or nursery is now stocked up with springtime annuals to truly make our garden come alive with color and become the showcase of the neighborhood. Popular garden favorites include Marigolds, Zinnias, Petunias, Alyssum, Lobelias, Begonias and the ever popular Impatiens. The nice thing about the annual color plants is that they are quick growing. Once the flowering starts, they will provide a great show for about 6 weeks or more.
Also now is the time to start working on those projects and plans for the garden which we keep putting off and saying we will do next year. Perhaps we planned on installing a barbeque, raised flower bed, hot spa, or even a greenhouse to grow those tender plants that need to extra warmth and humidity that isn't always available in the outdoor garden.
